What are we doing here?
Hello Ladies and Germs,
I am writing this in the summer of 2024, as I try to establish a foothold in something resembling a possible future career by creating a blog devoted to film criticism. I hope to have at the bare minimum one weekly review up on here, but as we get started I can not promise that will be as closely adhered to as I would like. I think as I start to develop a rhythm of reviewing films and getting them posted on here there will definitely be room for posts of other kinds, but that will have to wait for another day.
A little more about me, my name is Geoff Daniels and I am a Texas Tech graduate with a degree in Creative Media Industries from the college of Media and Communication. My degree is technically in production but don’t tell Raider Red that I really only ever cared about writing about films rather than making them (although making stuff is definitely fun). I am going to be attending the University of Iowa’s Cinematic Arts program this coming fall as I go for a Master’s in film studies. My ultimate goal is to be something within the film industry as an educator, communicator, critic, something or another, etc. Full transparency I am not totally sure yet. While I have dumped my current experience on you to try to convince you I know anything about what I’m talking about (although I will readily admit I sometimes don’t), I will here and now clearly articulate that I unfortunately have not seen every movie ever made, although I wish I had.
Before you ask, OF COURSE I have a Letterboxd (shamelessly plugged here), but I would prefer for that to be a more “funtime haha” portion of this new chapter of my life with film than an actual professional avenue by which I try to do film criticism. Although I do love Letterboxd and think its a phenomenal platform, trying to get people to sift through the lopsided ratio of some great jokes and some painfully unfunny ones to try and find my genuine thoughts on a film seems like a tough ask.
So anywho, if you’re reading this you are a real sicko because probably like 10 people will, and I can not wait to start talking about movies with you guys, sicko or not. I look forward to using this little doohickey to further hone my ability to coherently write and discuss filmmaking, as I do literally want to make it my job.
Thanks for reading, and keep watching in the free world.
